Retiring

From Melissa Phipps, your Guide to Retirement Planning
I was not a cheerleader in high school, but I might have been. I'm loud and sometimes in your face, and when I like something I get filled with irrepressible spirit. Rah! I don't have a team or a player to root for, but I am a fan of retirement plans. So let's hear it for the 401(k). Yay! I hope you regular readers are already 401(k) fans as well. If you know someone whose savings could use a booster, feel free to pass this newsletter along.

Understand Your 401(k) Plan
"401, 401, that's our plan. If it can't do it, nothing can!" If you have a 401(k) at work, you have access to an important retirement planning tool. It offers upfront tax benefits and tax-deferred investing, a total win-win. And if your employer matches some of the money you put in, it's a win-win-win. Find out more about what makes a 401(k) the MVP.

401(k) Contribution Limits for 2012
"Push 'em back, push em back, waaaaay back!" As good as the 401(k) is, there are limits. For example, there are maximum amounts that you can sock away each year. They change slightly over time, so look alive and keep up with them.

9 Things to Know About 401(k) Loans
"Give me an L. Give me an O. Give me an A. Give me an N. That spells loan." No exclamation mark here, because I'm not crazy about 401(k) loans. But if you have nowhere else to turn and you are considering borrowing against your retirement, find out how to avoid a fumble.

What if You Take Your 401(k) Money Early?
"401s rule! 401s rock! Without it you'd just have a bag of rocks!" One of the things I love about my 401(k) is that it exists. I didn't try too hard, think about it too much or sacrifice anything, and yet I have some net worth. If I had pulled the money out early it where would it be? Gone like the rest of my lifetime income. Plus, there would be taxes to pay.
