Retiring

From Melissa Phipps, your Guide to Retirement Planning
If you are at or near retirement age, congratulations -- you may have the opportunity to collect Social Security. (People who are 20-plus years from retirement may not be so lucky. But that's another discussion.) Now you just have to figure out how Social Security works.

When to Apply for Social Security
You can start getting Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, but to get full benefits you must wait until full retirement age. What age is that? It depends on when you were born.

How to Apply for Social Security
You can sign up for Social Security in a few different ways, but the recommended way is via an online application. Even if that sort of thing intimidates you, the process if fairly easy.

Understand How Spousal Benefits Work
Even if you never worked and earned Social Security credits, you may qualify for retirement benefits through your spouse, or even your ex-spouse.

What If I Want to Keep Working?
You can apply for Social Security if you are still working. The amount you receive in benefits may be reduced while you receive other income, but it all works out over time.
